The Stillness of the Soil: A Meditation for the Autumn Equinox

September 23rd marks the autumn equinox, the one moment in the year when light and dark stand in perfect balance. From here, the nights grow longer and the year begins its slow turn toward winter.

It’s a natural invitation to pause. To stop pushing forward for a moment and simply notice where you are.

At Vetiver & Rose, we like to mark days like this with a short meditation, supported by three essential oils that reflect the spirit of the season: sandalwood, frankincense, and bergamot. Below, you’ll find the meditation itself, along with a little about why each oil was chosen.

The Meditation: The Stillness of the Soil

Set aside five minutes where you won’t be disturbed. If you have your oils to hand, a drop of each on a tissue or in a diffuser will help you settle into the practice.

Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take three deep, slow breaths before reading on, or ask someone to read this to you.

Imagine yourself sitting in a quiet, snow-covered forest at twilight. The air is crisp, but you are wrapped in a blanket of warm, grounding sandalwood.

Sink your awareness into the earth beneath you. Like the trees in winter, your energy is drawing downward, resting deep within the roots. There is nothing you need to achieve right now. There is only stillness.

Breathe in the scent of frankincense. Feel it clearing your mind, creating a sacred space within your chest. In this quiet darkness, you are safe, protected, and completely at peace. You are resting, recharging, and gathering strength.

Now, feel a gentle warmth at the crown of your head, like the very first ray of the morning sun hitting the snow. This is the energy of bergamot. It reminds you that the wheel of the year is turning. The light is coming back.

Hold this balance within yourself: the deep, peaceful stillness of the winter night, and the bright, hopeful spark of the returning sun. When you are ready, gently open your eyes.

The Oils, and Why They’re Here

Sandalwood is one of the most grounding oils used in aromatherapy. Its soft, woody, slightly sweet scent has long been associated with meditation and stillness. It’s warming without being stimulating, making it a natural fit for a season that’s easing us toward the quieter, darker half of the year.

Frankincense has been used in contemplative and spiritual practice for centuries. Its resinous, slightly citrusy aroma is known for deepening the breath and quieting a busy mind, creating a sense of sacred space wherever it’s used, ideal for carving out a still moment in an otherwise full day.

Bergamot is brighter and more citrus-forward, but gentler than many other citrus oils. It lifts the mood without overstimulating, carrying a note of hope and lightness. Paired with the deep stillness of sandalwood and frankincense, it echoes the equinox itself, the balance of light and dark, rest and renewal.

Take a Moment Today

However you’re spending the equinox, we hope you can find five minutes to sit with it. Slow down, breathe, and let the season do what it does best and remind us that things turn, and turn again.
